Michigan Study Maps Cyclospora Outbreak to Iceberg Lettuce
An interim report published Sept. 2 in NEJM Evidence records 6,065 cyclosporiasis cases in Michigan as of July 22, covering 69 of the state's 83 counties, with illness onsets from May 10 through July 18. Food-history interviews covering 51.3% of patients identified iceberg lettuce and meals at one restaurant chain as potential exposure sources. Authors from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services described the investigation as ongoing. For 2026 Multistate Cyclosporiasis Outbreak (3203), the state-authored epidemiology gives consumer-protection plaintiffs a contemporaneous public-health record on outbreak scale, geography and implicated product while related actions proceed. The paper does not assign liability to any grower or restaurant.
Michigan Court Bars Kalshi Sports Contracts Pending Final Order
An Ingham County Circuit Court preliminary injunction now bars Kalshi from offering internet sports-betting contracts in Michigan while the state’s enforcement action proceeds. Judge Rosemarie E. Aquilina’s Sept. 1 order reaches sports-contract functions including matching, settling, marketing and facilitating wagers, and requires Kalshi to use a Michigan Gaming Control Board-licensed third-party geolocation provider. The company faces a potential $500,000-per-day fine for each day the court finds it failed to comply with those geolocation requirements. The restraint remains in place until a final order, giving gambling-harm litigants a current judicial record treating event-contract products as subject to state sports-betting controls.
